Songs Of Resistance

"Then sing our rebel song, as we proudly sweep along.
To end the age-long tyranny that makes for human tears;
Our march is nearer done with each setting of the sun,
And the tyrant's might is passing with the passing of the years.''
- James Connolly, A Rebel Song.

This is my collection of rebel songs and other Irish patriotic songs. By clicking on a title on the scrollbar you will switch to the lyrics of that song which will then be displayed in the main window. Click on the name of the author to view a short biography. Also there are a few links within some of the songs which will provide more background information about people or places (example: Roll Of Honour). Please note that links on this page are not underlined but normal highlighted words that change color when activated like this (does not work with Netscape). You'll get a description of each link in the status bar of your browser.

"We shall never conquer Ireland while the Bards are there."
So said Elizabeth I of England when she outlawed poets and pipers and ordered her deputies to "hang the harpers wherever found."

Some songs have a midi attached to their title - these songs will be played while you're reading the text (Only if you have a MIDI-player installed on your system). Some songs can be downloaded as RealAudio files too. They are marked with Real Audio this icon.

Many of the songs were typed off from books or wherever I could find them. Many others are directly "listened off" from a tape or CD and therefore they may not be absolutely perfect. I am trying hard to get them as close as possible to the original text. Still, some words or passages may not be correct and there may be some obvious mistakes especially in passages containing names and places that I do not know.

If you find any mistakes in the lyrics - please let me know. This is the only thing that I expect from you in return for my work with putting up this page and collecting the lyrics. Thanks.

I hope that you find what you are looking for. If not - you might want to send me an e-mail so I can try to get the lyrics of that particular song you are looking for. It's worth a try ... and if YOU have any lyrics that fit the topic and that are not listed here yet, just mail them to me and I will put them up.

Tiocfaidh Ár Lá,

Many thanks to Christian Werner who contributed so many songs to this collection. I just hope that you'll get that ISDN card soon ...

"Blood is a cleansing and sanctifying thing, and the nation that regards it as the final horror has lost its manhood ... there are many things more horrible than bloodshed, and slavery is one of them!" - Padraic Pearse (1879 - 1916)
